Great Britain Postal History 1840 (May 8) stampless entire letter, addressed to Messrs. Sharp & Dickson Stamp Office Alnwick with red Newcastle on Tyne c.d.s. and handstruck "1" (Robson Lowe type b) in the same colour, from Stamp Office Newcastle with interesting comments "We have had a great many applications for licenses for the sale of the Postage stamps...... The form of account enclosed in your letter seems to me ill adapted for the purpose, with the exception of the column for paper which though it will answer your purpose well will not do as a monthly return, in as much as you must charge yourself for the quantity sold by the ream only as charged to you by the Board & not by the retail price" signed Henry Reed for John Reed; in addition a ledger sheet headed "Account of sale of Postage Stamps - Quarter ending July 5th. 1840" showing quantities sold for "Wholesale" covers 1d., do. 2d., Envelopes 1d. do. 2d., "Retail" covers 1d., do. 2d., envelopes 1d., do. 2d. (relating the the Mulready´s) and Labels 1d. and do. 2d. (interestingly there are only sales recorded for the Mulready´s at wholesale prices and no sales are recorded for the 2d. label), endorsed on reverse "Origl. sent J Reed Es this day July 8 - 1840". A fascinating and highly important pair of recently discovered postal documents. Photo Estimate £ 6,000-8,000
