Sierra Leone Military Mail 1898 (late) unstamped officer´s envelope to England, marked "On active service no stamps available. A.F. Becke. Lieut. R.A." and with 1896-97 1d. dull mauve and carmine added at Freetown and cancelled with Paid Liverpool Br. Packet c.d.s. (15.1) in red (usually applied in black when cancelling stamps); a few small faults on flap though a most attractive from the Hut Tax War. S.G. 42. Photo Estimate £ 500-600 Note: When an annual hut tax imposed by Governor Sir Frederic Cardew to help subsidise the administration of the Protectorate a number of chiefs refused to pay. There were extended operations in various districts which finally led to the capture of Chief Bai Bureh, the relief of Bandajuma, the destruction of Bumpe, and the collapse of the revolt. (Beale)
