Niger Coast Protectorate Forcados 1894 (25 May) Royal Niger Co. blue linen backed envelope (229x101mm.) to London, bearing Great Britain 1887-92 5d. dull purple and blue cancelled "Forcados 25/5/94" in manuscript and tied by Liverpool "paquebot" h.s. (Robertson P30, Hosking 66), and with Paid Liverpool Br. Packet c.d.s. (1.7) alongside, London c.d.s. (2.7) on reverse; vertical crease at centre, otherwise fine. A rare and unusual usage of Great Britain stamps during the Protectorate period. Photo Estimate £ 1,200-1,400 Note: Another cover, originally in the R.B. Sanderson collection, exists with a similar stamp cancelled "Forcados 23/6/94" and endorsed "Gama Gama". The Forcados River was the boundary between the Niger Coast Protectorate and Niger Territories in the west of the delta. The ocean going port was in the protectorate of Akassa, which was silting up. Gama Gama was constructed on the opposite bank, a short-lived attempt to give the company a new port. Nearby Burutu was later developed instead
