Gambia 1898 (31 Dec.) small envelope from Bathurst to Freetown, Sierra Leone, bearing 1886-93 1d. crimson with variety double embossing cancelled by "bathurst/gambia" c.d.s. with a further strike alongside, no other markings. A scarce variety, particularly used on cover, paying the new Empire 1d. rate that had been introduced just six days earlier on 25 December 1898. R.P.S. Certificate (1991). S.G. 23 var.
