x Tasmania Early Letters and Handstamps 1834 (6 Feb.) entire letter from Andrew Crombie at Hobart carried by the "Caroline" to Edinburgh, rated "4" (deleted) and "2/8", showing boxed " 1/2" and handstruck "1" with, on reverse, framed "India Letter/Gravesend" overstruck by red London (16.6) and arrival (18.6) datestamps; 1834 (28 Sept.) entire letter from Hobart carried by the "Cleopatra" to London, rated "3" and "1/8" and, showing on reverse framed "india letter/deal" (crossed by tear through opening) overstruck by red c.d.s. (14.2). A fine pair Estimate £ 100-120 Note: The "Caroline", under the command of Captain Edward P. Tregurtha, arrived at Hobart on 31 July 1831, from India, with prisoners. She was then engaged whaling in the South Seas. The "Cleopatra", under the command of Captain George Sweet, sailed from Hobart on 29 September and arrived off Deal on 14 February. She was wrongly reported as having been wrecked at the Falkland Islands.
