South Africa 1877-79, one clasp, 1877 (Tpr. C. Durrant - Stewart. Bowkers Rovers.), hyphen in surname officially corrected, very fine Estimate £ 800-1,200 Forsyth´´s published transcription of the South Africa 1877-79 medal roll does not list a ´´Trooper C. Durrant-Stewart, Bowkers Rovers´´, however it does give a ´´Trooper S.C. Durrant´´ as part of the same unit and as entitled to the ´´1877´´ clasp. It is probable that this is the same man, but also possible that ´´Durrant-Stewart´´ is listed on a roll as attached to another unit. In either case, this medal and edge inscription appears entirely as issued (taking into account the official correction). The ´´error´´ of either the name or the unit is almost certainly attributable to human error, as was quite often the case when transcribing unusual names from the Royal Mint rolls to the relevant medal.
