Hemsley, Royal Air Force 1939-1945 Star; Italy Star; Defence and War Medals, extremely fine, together with the following official documents &c.: - Named condolence slip confirming the four awards - Parchment Memorial Scroll, named to ´Flying Officer P.H. Hemsley Royal Air Force´, in envelope of issue, addressed to Mrs. C.K. Hemsley, 41 Park Row, Nottingham - Various copies of the Operational Records Book detailing the recipient´s service - Portrait photograph of the recipient (4) Estimate £ 100-120 Flying Officer Phillip Hardy Hemsley, born Sherwood, Nottingham, 1911; served with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve during the Second World War, and posted to 454 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force (Baltimores); took part in operations over Italy: ´´bombed 6 or more M.T. on road approximately 6 miles N.E. of Mestre from 800 feet...a reddish light was straffed with front guns causing many small explosions...intense light accurate flak was encountered´´ (5.4.1945); ´´Jerry seems to be either subdued or confused by the aircraft over him at night...a great day for the Squadron´´ (12.4.1945) (Operations Record Book refers); killed in action during operations over the Po and Adige Rivers and roads in the Argenta area, Italy, on ´´Black Friday´´ 13.4.1945, when the Squadron lost 8 crew killed, its first losses since beginning Operational Night Intruder work, and is buried in Bologna War Cemetery, Italy.
