x Punniar Star 1843 (Lieutt. Thomas Pounall 39th Regt Native Infantry), good very fine, with original brass rivets and contemporary silver eyelet and bar suspension Estimate £ 550-650 Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Pownall [sic] (1815-1869), born Marylebone, Middlesex; educated at Merchant Taylors School; nominated for Cadetship into the Indian Army by Sir William Young, Bart.; Commissioned Ensign 39th Madras Native Infantry, 1835; served with the Force sent against the Bheels, 1837; Lieutenant 1839; served with the Force sent against Rajah Maun Singh, of Jodhpor, 1839; served in Bundlecund, 1843, and commanded a detachment of the 39th in the Beeghora Jungle, this attachment was attacked and surrounded on all sides on the night of 10th April 1843, and Pownall had a volley fired through his tent by a large body of insurgents, who were repulsed before the arrival of a relief force; served with the Brigade under Colonel Yates during the Gwalior Campaign; Captain 1849; served during the whole of the Indian Mutiny at Dehra Ismail Khan; Major 1859; retired Lieutenant-Colonel 1861; died in Stoke Newington, London.
