x The Maharajpoor Star to Captain J.H. Burnett, 16th Native Infantry, Killed in Action at Ferozeshuhur Where He Was Brigade Major of the 4th Infantry Brigade, 21.12.1845 Maharajpoor Star 1843 (Bt. Captn. J.H. Burnett 16th Regt Grenadiers), nearly extremely fine, with original brass rivets, contemporary silver straight bar suspension, ornate silver top riband bar and silver ´95 SPS´ brooch attached to riband Estimate £ 600-800 Captain John Hamilton Burnett (1811-45), born Peebles, Scotland; commissioned Ensign 54th Native Infantry, 1828; transferred 16th Native Infantry the following year; Lieutenant 1834; served with the Regiment in Afghanistan, and in 1839 took part in the occupation of Kandahar and the storm and capture of Ghuznee (medal); his regiment was left in occupation of the fortress and in September and October was in operations against insurgents and marauders in the Ghilzai country and was present in the action of 22nd September in the Indran Hills, near Killugu, in which the principal body of the Ghilzai banditti was surprised, routed and almost annihilated by a detachment under the command of Major McLaren; appointed Staff Officer of a detachment under Colonel Chambers, 5th Light Cavalry, June 1841; the detachment was to operate against insurgents in the Ghuznee district, and he was present with them in action near Karutu, 5.8.1841; appointed Brigade Quarter Master, November 1841; throughout 1842 he was continuously employed with his regiment in the force under General Nott in various actions at and around Kandahar, and took part in the expedition to the Kojak Range and in the relief of Kelat-i-Ghilzie; he was present in the action of Goaine and the defeat of the Afghans before Ghuznee and the recapture of that place; took part in the affairs of Beni Badam and Maidan and at the re-occupation of Cabul and in various actions in the passes between Cabul and Peshawar during the return march to India (medal); served during the Gwalior Campaign and was present at the battle of Maharajpoor as Brigade Quarter Master to the 3rd Brigade of Infantry; on the outbreak of the 1st Sikh War and the formation of the Army of the Sutlej, December 1845, he was appointed Brigade Major to the Fourth Brigade of Infantry, and with it was present at the battle of Moodkee and Ferozeshuhur, he was killed in action at the latter, ´´he fell whilst gallantly moving forward to the assault of the Sikh entrenchments, 21st December 1845.´´ His name is listed, with those killed or mortally wounded at Ferozeshuhur, on a brass tablet in St. Andrew´´s Church, Ferozeshuhur.
