x Army of India 1799-1826, short hyphen reverse die type, one clasp, Kirkee and Poona (Capt. J.A. Moore, Russell´s Cav. N.S.), officially impressed, Royal Mint, entire medal somewhat polished overall resulting in naming weak in places, edge bruising, therefore good fine Estimate £ 3,500-4,000 Captain John Arthur Moore, born Ireland, September 1791; entered the Royal Navy as a Supernumerary, H.M.S. Royal George, July 1806; transferred to H.M.S. Ajax off Cadiz, October 1806, under the command of Captain the Hon. Henry Blackwood, which ship, whilst at anchor off Tenedos, accidentally caught fire and blew up, February 1807; transferred as a result to H.M.S. Thunderer as a Midshipman, under the command of Captain John Talbot; involved in the passage of the Dardanelles and the destruction of the Turkish Squadron off Point Pesquies, being slightly wounded in these operations; transferred to H.M.S. Warspite, again under the command of Captain Blackwood, on the Home Station and also in the Mediterranean where he participated in a ´´very gallant skirmish´´, when the British with a small force beat back a powerful division of the French Fleet, 20.7.1810; Appointed Master´´s Mate, H.M.S. Orontes, under the command of Captain Nathaniel Day Cochrane, with whom he served on the coast of Ireland and in the West Indies, until promoted Lieutenant, February 1815. In March 1817 Moore signed a Free Mariner´´s Covenant with the Honourable East India Company; arrived in India late 1817 with Russell´´s Cavalry as a Captain-Lieutenant, and served on detached duty during the Third Mahratta War at the Battle of Kirkee, 5.11.1817, and the Capture of Poona, 11-16.11.1817; Commissioned Lieutenant, June 1818; employed as Military Secretary to the Commanding Officer in the Himalayas; retired 1838; elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, February 1846; Director, Honourable East India Company, May 1850 to April 1851; died in London, July 1860.
