Zululand 1885 (16 Dec.) envelope from "No. 1115 Private William Raper 1st. Inng. Fusl.. Camp Eshowe, Natal South Africa" to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing Natal 1884 1d. rose cancelled "2" at Durban in transit; failing to find the addressee after three attempts the cover was returned to Durban where it was discovered that Private Raper had deserted and with manuscript "Deserted" applied on face panel along with various delivery notations, Pietermaritzburg and Manchester Returned Letter Branch c.d.s. and other markings; the envelope opened-out and understandably rather soiled, nevertheless a remarkable failed 1d. rate cover. Photo Estimate £ 400-500 Note: 1st. Battalion H.M. Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, under Major F. Coffey, landed at Durban in November 1884 and moved on the 24th. to Eshowe on garrison duty.
