Sudan The First Suakin Expedition 1885 (23 Mar.) envelope (a fraction toned) "From No. 934 Pte. E. Cadnam 1/ Shropre. L.I. On Active Service" from Suakin to London, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and showing part Suakin c.d.s., boxed "T" and "1" charge marks, the reverse with Suez (29.3) and London (7.4) c.d.s. Photo Estimate £ 600-700 Note: Following General Gordon´´s murder and the fall of Khartoum, a second British Expedition, intending to destroy the power of Osman Digna, was commanded again by Major-General Sir Gerald Graham V.C. who reached Suakin on 12th. March. The 1st. Battalion Shropshire Light Infantry joined Graham´´s force reaching Suakin on 11th. March Although a contingent of the Army Post Office was requisitioned for service in Sudan it did not arrive in Sudan until 27th. March. Before its arrival mail was sent through the Egyptian Civil Post Office at Suakin
