India 1883 (11 Jan.) Soldier´s and Seamen´s 9p. envelope from "Pte William Flynn 2 Batt. the Queens" at Peshawar to Newton, Mass., U.S.A., countersigned by the Commending Officer and cancelled with "L" duplex, the reverse with Plymouth Ship Letter (15.2) and New York Paid All (26.2) d.s. Estimate £ 100-120 Note: Until 31 January 1880, the P&O contract mails were landed at Southampton. Although this port continued to be used from 1 February, by special concession, as a P&O calling port for the landing of soldier´´s letters carried by non-contract steamers, this ceased altogether on 29 December 1881. To maintain the non-contract 9p. facility for soldiers, the P&O began using Plymouth as a calling port on the homeward journey only. The first stop-over occurred on 11 January 1882
