India 1882 (4 Apr.) part printed regimental envelope "From No. 2200 Pte. H. Salmon 2nd. Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment." at Delhi to "Mr. Thomas Childs Barque Felicita care of British Consul Coronel, Chile South America" countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing 8p. mauve cancelled with "L" duplex, the reverse with Bombay (7.4), Plymouth Ship Letter (3.5) and Conception (25.6) c.d.s.; some light overall foxing though a very rare destination. Photo Estimate £ 400-500 Note: The 9p. paid for the letter to be carried on a non-contract P&O ship via Plymouth, the depot at Southampton now closed. From Plymouth the letter was sent to the Pacific Steam Navigation Company´´s depot at Liverpool. On 25 April 1872, the Company made proposals to the G.P.O. for a new postal contract which included the "carrying of unpaid dead letters, official despatches of Her Majesty´´s Government, and soldier´´s and seamen´´s letters, free of charge". Coronel was included in the list of ports to be called at on the passage to Valparaiso. The contract was agree and renewed in 1878
