Lot: 237

India 1874 (29 July) and 1875 (6 Feb.) privately printed regimental envelopes "From Robert Williams, Qr. Master Sergeant, 44th. Regiment." at Kamptee to Liverpool, both signed by the Commanding Officer, the first "via Southampton" and franked with 8p. purple cancelled with "1/N-1" duplex, the second "via Brindisi" and bearing 8p. purple and 2a. yellow-orange similarly cancelled and showing manuscript "4d"; the second envelope toned and with other faults though a most unusual pair with the latter rare Estimate £ 200-250 Note: The "via Italy" route came about following the opening of the Mount Cenis Tunnel on 5 January 1872. This provided a new faster route between England and the East via the Italian port of Brindisi through Italy, France and Calais. This experimental route was seldom used by soldiers as the additional foreign transit postage across Italy of 3d., or 2 annas, had to be paid in addition to the consessionery rate of 1d.
