Cape of Good Hope Military Mail 1853 (1 May) entire letter "From No 2670 Private Richard Herbert, 6th. Royal Regiment of Foot" at Dohne to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and showing "2" charge h.s. (the ship´s Captain´s gratuity on letters received by private ship) and, on reverse, London transit c.d.s. (2.7); rather age stained though a rare item written from Kaffraria just after the conclusion of the Great Kaffir War. Photo Estimate £ 400-500 Note: H.M. 6th. Royal Regiment saw continuous active service throughout the Great Kaffir War (1850-53). With the surrender of Sandilli and the other Kaffir Chiefs, and submission of the Kaffir tribes, the war came to an end on 9th. March 1853. The regiment was then stationed at Keiskama Hoek with detachments at a number of posts in the district including Dohne, north of Stutterheim
