India 1861 (Jan.) envelope "From Joseph Irlam seaman H.M.S. Marlborough Corfu" to "Thomas Fazakerley, Private 117, 8th. Company H.M. 75th. Regiment Allahabad or else where India", countersigned by the Commending Officer and bearing G.B. 1d. red cancelled at London (30.1) in transit, part Bombay, Calcutta and Allahabad c.d.s. on reverse; the envelope with part flap missing and other faults though most unusual in being from a seaman to a soldier and correctly paid at the 1d. concessionary rate to a soldier. Photo Estimate £ 600-700 Note: H.M.S. Marlborough was the Flagship of the British Mediterranean Squadron. It had stopped at Corfu on one of its patrols. Irlam had with him, or had obtained from the ship´´s Purser, a 1d. stamp and the letter had then travelled in a closed naval bag to London The 75th. Regiment was involved throughout the Indian Mutiny and the final defeat of the mutineers at Lucknow
