India The Indian Mutiny, 1857-59 1858 (2 Nov.) envelope (complete with letter) from Sergeant T. Bowen at camp Morar, Gwalior "via Southampton" to Birmingham, franked at the full civilian rate with 4a. black cancelled with manuscript "Stamped" and diamond of dots, showing framed "india paid" and London Paid c.d.s. (22.12), Bombay (8.11) and Birmingham (23.12) c.d.s. on reverse, the contents graphically describing the activities of the mutineers and the escape of Tantia Topi; sent at the civilian rate as the writer had sent several letters at the concessionary rate without answer, he hopes that paying the full postage he will receive an answer. Light Dragoons which formed part of the Central India Field Force which captured Morar on 16 June 1858 November 2, the date the letter was written, was an historic day in India, for following the end of the East India Company, India was transferred to the Crown. Sergeant Brown records "The Proclamation is to be promulgated throughout India today appointing our Queen to the title of Empress of India"
