India The Indian Mutiny, 1857-59 1858 (8 Jan.) envelope "From Gr. and Dr. R. Pepper 5 Compy 13th. Batt R.A." at Bithur to England, countersigned by the Commending Officer and showing framed "india unpaid" alongside "2" charge h.s., the reverse with weak Cawnpore, Calcutta, London (5.3) and Brighton (5.3) c.d.s.; some stains in places and part of flap missing though an unusual unpaid cover Estimate £ 100-120 Note: This cover was written by Dr. Pepper, serving with the 5th. Company, 13th. Battalion Royal Artillary while sited at Bithur, a village north of Cawnpore, where Nana Sahib, the rebel chieftain had a palace. The 5/13th. had landed at Calcutta on 18 September 1857 arriving at Cawnpore on 1 December. Pepper had just taken part with the Oudh Field Force in the 2nd. Battle of Cawnpore on 6 December The Bithur Post Office had been destroyed when the mutineers first took control of the village at the end of May. The letter was therefore sent back to Cawnpore from where it was forwarded via Calcutta to England
