Sol. 7) and, on reverse, despatch, Madras Out Station Ship Letter and other transit d.s. Photo Estimate £ 200-250 Note: An Act of 1 September 1840 altered the rates payable on an unpaid soldier´´s letter carried by ship. Previously only 1d. U.K. Inland Postage was paid plus a Ship Captain´´s gratuity of 2d. Now, besides the gratuity the recipient had to pay the 1d. Inland Postage plus a fine of 1d. for being unpaid
