India 1840 (7 Apr.) entire letter "From Private F. Wicks 1st. European Regt." at Dinapore to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and showing two fair to good strikes of the rare "india.ship.letter/4/london" double-ring d.s. (In. 3 with Robertson commenting "but none of the examples known to the author are on soldier´s letters"), the reverse with "dinapore/free" oval d.s. and boxed Calcutta Ship Letter d.s.; overall soiling though very rare. Photo Estimate £ 200-250 Note: The contents give the story of his voyage to India. Upon arrival in the Bay of Bengal his ship, the Duke of Buccleugh, ship ran aground on a sand bank. There follows graphic details of how some of the passengers were rescued, how he had to stay on board for two days and two nights, and his further onward voyage Private Wicks died in an Insane Hospital in 1843
