India 1838 (18 Aug.) entire letter "From John Wilmott, Musician, No 499 HM 41 Regt." at Bellary to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and showing "bellary/free" oval d.s. in red alongside "india soldiers/3/london" circular h.s. (In. Sol. 4), the reverse with largely fine "madras/ship letter/free" c.d.s. (31.8) (HG SR4) and arrival c.d.s. (27.12); small part of reverse flap missing, otherwise sound. Photo Estimate £ 250-300 Note: The Post Office Act of 1 October 1837 provided that in addition to land postage, postage should be levied on all incoming and outgoing Ship Letters, the charge to be 2 annas on outward letters not exceeding 3 tolas.. Free Indian Inland Postage was already granted to soldiers sending their letters to the U.K., but to identify free Indian Ship Letter Postage the Madras Ship Letter Free handstamp made its appearance
