India 1838 (20 Mar.) entire letter "From Mary Ann Bonner, 5th. Bn. Bengal Aty. Widows Letter" at Cawnpore to London, signed by the Commanding Officer and showing partially fine "india soldier &/3/london" circular h.s. (In. Sol. 5) overstruck with "g.p." and circular-framed "l" h.s. in red, the reverse with Calcutta Ship Letter boxed d.s. (25.3), three London d.s. (27.10), all in red, and manuscript "Neither name known at 7th. Gt. Suffolk St. J. Payne"; a few faults on face panel and part of one flap missing though an interesting and unusual cover. Photo Estimate £ 250-300 Note: Sergeant Samuel Bonner was serving in the 4th. Company, 5th. Battalion, Bengal Foot Artillery when he died on 30 January 1838. He had served with the Bengal Artillery including active service in the 1st. Burmese War Mrs. Bonner had sought the use of free Indian Postage and Col. Briggs had used his discretion and franked the letter
