India 1827 (26 June) entire letter from Sam Shackell in H.M. 11th. Dragoons at Cawnpore to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and showing a fair strike of the "india seaman &/1/london" circular h.s. (In. Sol. 2a), the reverse with Calcutta General Post Office d.s. (no date completed) and London transit c.d.s. (date unclear); the entire letter with some damage and wear at folds, and a little soiled though showing what is believed to be the sole example of this London Soldier´s handstamp recorded. Photo Estimate £ 300-400 Note: H.M. 11th. Dragoons landed at Calcutta in July 1819. Over the following year it lost 3 officers and 166 other ranks to disease. In 1825 in took a very active part in the capture of Bhurtpore. On completion of hostilities in 1826 it returned to Cawnpore The "&c" in this handstamp refers to "& Soldier"
