India 1824 (3 Feb.) entire letter "From R Webb Gunner 7th. Company 1st. Bn. Artillery Nagpore", countersigned by the Commanding Officer and showing Calcutta General Post Office c.d.s. with date completed in manuscript, "p Potton" (the East India Company´s ship) and with a largely fine strike of the rare circular-framed "india soldier &c/3/deal" h.s. (M.1), the reverse marked "Kamptee the 3rd. February 1824" by the recipient ?, and with Calcutta General Post Office (17.2) and London (17.8) transit c.d.s. Photo Estimate £ 500-600 Note: Interesting contents with the writer informing his mother and father that 47 out of 200 men had died during the rainy season and that he has married a Eurasian girl ... "I married her by selling my daily allowance of spirits and other work, and it cost her father 2000 Rupees on the wedding night etc."
