India 1811 (14 Apr.) entire letter from Eynsham to "Sergeant J. Workman 17 Regiment of Foot Merut Bengal East India", showing "ensham" h.s., London Paid d.s. (15.4) in red and with large manuscript "P 1d", the reverse with Calcutta G.P.O. oval d.s. (10.12). An early incoming letter to a soldier in India Estimate £ 180-200 Note: Under an Act of 1st. August 1806, all soldiers employed by the King within any parts of "His Majesty´´s Dominions" were entitled to receive or send pre-paid letters of a single sheet for 1d. This rate for soldiers serving in India was in place for only a short time. G.P.O. Instruction No. 13 of August 1811 (four months after this letter was sent) denied the privilege to those troops serving abroad where there was no communication by British Packet boats. There was no Packet service between the U.K. and India at this time
