Ceylon 1832 (21 Oct.) entire "From A. Mc.Gowan Pt. Soldier 78th. Regiment" at Trincomalee to Scotland, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and showing Crown-framed "trinco/post free" d.s. alongside a fine strike of the "india soldiers/3/london" circular h.s. (In. Sol. 4), the reverse with "madras/free/soldiers letter" c.d.s. (2.11) in red, Madras oval d.s. (2.11), London (25.4) and Edinburgh (27.4) c.d.s. A rare early soldiers letter from Ceylon. Photo Estimate £ 1,200-1,500 Note: H.M. 78th. Highlanders sailed from Ireland on 23 April 1826 and disembarked at Colombo in August where it remained in garrison until 2 October. It then marched to Kandy. On 31 August 1831 four companies and Headquarters were ordered to Trincomalee. In 1832 this station was attacked by cholera. 114 men contracted the disease of which 46 actually died
