St. Vincent 1796 (8 Apr.) entire letter from Sergeant Smith of the 3rd. Battalion, 60th. Regiment to Scotland, despite being correctly drawn up as a soldier´s letter and signed by the Commanding Officer the cover has been rated "4d" (deleted) and "1/7" (Packet rate of 1/- plus 7d. Inland Postage), and showing circular-framed "dum/fries" on face and with London c.d.s. on reverse. The letter, written by Sergeant Smith at Walliabou Falls, provides graphic details of his and his regiment´s actions at Grande Sable, Fort Charlotte, Vigie, Millers Ridge and Zion Hill, and includes "I suppose you know that it will cost you one penny according to the Act of Parliament, which you must get marked on the letter with red ink by the Post Master, and my letter will cost you no more either".
