Medals (4) and items relating to Ludwig Mond and his Wife, Ludwig Mond, celebratory medal by Edward Lanteri for his 70th birthday, 1909, 117 mm., silver, cast in two parts and joined, signed below bust, most handsome, extremely fine; cast bronze uniface cliché of a memorial medal for Mrs Ludwig Mond, 1909, 117 mm., unsigned, some marks, good very fine; cast silvered bronze memorial medal, 44mm. for Mrs Ludwig Mond, 1909, engraved in memoriam on reverse small verdigris deposit by right edge, extremely fine; similar, bronze, unsilvered, reverse without engraving, in presentation case, extremely fine; a letter by Lady Violet Mond with sketch in for a memorial to Ludwig Mond, dated 22 Feb 1922; a group of ten photographs, two signed by Ludwig Mond, relating to the Mond family and its associates, including a large picture of Ludwig Mond with John Brunner (15) Estimate £ 700-900 Ludwig Mond was one of the founding fathers of the British chemical industry. Born in Kassel, Germany, he came to England in 1867. Worked with Solvay to develop the Solvay process for making ammonia soda. Co-founder of Brunner-Mond in 1872, based at Winnington in Cheshire, which became the world´´s largest producer of alkalies. Later developed the Mond process which is used to extract nickel from its ores and set up the Mond Nickel company. He left a notable collection of old master paintings to the National Gallery. Edward Lanteri, 1848-1917, born in Burgundy and settled in England. Pupil of the Ecole des Beaux Arts and appointed as an assistant to Sir Edgar Boehm in 1868. Later mainly known as a sculptor, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, and master of sculpture classes at the Royal College of Art. Also a member if the London Society of Medallists with a number of commissions undertaken. An example of this celebratory medal in bronze is in the National Portrait Gallery Collection (NPG 4511). A silver version was not known before this example surfaced.
