Completion of the Campanile at Zadar, Croatia, 1891, gold medal by ´WP, within an ornamented cartouche, a view of the finished Campanile and the side of the Cathedral, signed WP on ground, rev. in a similar cartouche, Latin legend in fifteen lines, 50mm., 49.7g, maker´s mark and gold mark on edge, extremely fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 300-500 During the 1880s Jackson travelled extrensively in the Balkans. He made a careful study of the monuments, works of art, and architecture of Ragusa, Dalmatia, Istria, and the Adriatic Coast, and published his drawings and studies in a three volume work in 1888. The Dalmatians in Zadar sought his help in completing the city´´s campanile, which, though started in the 12th century, had not progressed beyong the first level. The tower was successfully completed to Jackson´´s design, which was inspired by the Cathedral at Rab.
