Cheshire, Macclesfield, Roe & Co., Halfpenny, 1789, an unfinished reverse pattern, female seated with cogwheel of six spokes and drill, windlass behind from which rope hangs, legend MMACCLESFIELD [sic], rev. blank, edge plain (DH.8, this specimen), good very fine, the blank side subsequently scratched in the form of a flourish or scroll; important, interesting and unique Estimate £ 1,500-2,000 PROVENANCE: Lincoln ´No. 1 Collection´´ 1934 No illustration of this piece has been published before; it was untraced by Dalton and Hamer. The first M in the place-name is out of alignment with the rest of the lettering; there is no evidence of double-striking, however. The curving of the date figures was not adopted for any normal issues for the company. Hanging rope did not appear on regular 1789 issues but did on those of the following year
