Naval General Service 1793-1840, three clasps, 14 March 1795, Camperdown, 12 Octr 1798 (A. McMillan, Midshipman.), pawn broker´s mark to edge at 11o´clock, good very fine Estimate £ 5,000-6,000 Allan McMillan (listed as ´´Allan McMillane´´ on published transcription of rolls) served as Boy in H.M.S. Bedford as part of Admiral Hotham´´s successful action with the French Fleet off Genoa, 14.3.1795, when two ships-of the-line were captured; he was borne as Able Seaman on the same ship´´s books for the defeat of the Dutch fleet at Camperdown, 11.10.1797; McMillan served as Midshipman in H.M.S. Foudroyant for the capture the French 74 gun ship-of-the-line Hoche and three frigates by Commodore Sir John Borlase Warren´´s squadron off the north-west coast of Ireland, 12.10.1798. Lieutenant Allan McMillan joined the Royal Navy as a Boy, 25.9.1791; he served in H.M.S. Bedford (Captain Sir Andrew Snape Hamond) from the latter date until May 1798 (except for an interval between November 1795-January 1797) on the Home and Mediterranean Stations under Captains Robert Mann, Davidge Gould, Augustus Montgomery and Sir Thomas Byard; appointed Midshipman for service in H.M.S. Foudroyant (bearing the successive flags of Lord Nelson and Keith); he served in the latter under Captain Sir Edward Berry at the blockade of Malta, where he assisted at the capture of Le Genereux and the Ville de Marseilles, 18.2.1800; he was also present when the Foudroyant in company with the Lion and the Penelope captured the French flag-ship Guillaume Tell, with Rear Adimiral Decres and 1,000 men on board; McMillan saw service with 13 different ships on the Home and Baltic stations between February 1803-31.10.1810, commanding the Convulsion, 1805-06; and accompanying Captain James Boxer in the Skylark on the expedition to Walacheren, 1809; his last appointments were in the Scylla, 1811, and in the Calliope off Flushing, Heligoland, until January 1814.
