A Great War Group of Three to Lance-Corporal R.N. Crompton, Seaforth Highlanders, Killed in Action, 11.11.1914 1914 Star, with copy Bar (722 L.Cpl. R. Crompton. 1/Sea: Highrs:); British War and Victory Medals (722 Pte. R. Crompton Sea. Highrs.), good very fine or better (3) Estimate £ 160-200 722 Lance-Corporal Robert Norman Crompton, born Camberwell, London; served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders on the Western Front from 12.10.1914; he was killed in action 11.11.1914; in early November the 1st Battalion were involved in the closing stages of the 1st battle of Ypres, the Battalion War Diary entry for 11.11.1914 gives, ´´12 Midnight 10/11th November, Neuve Chapelle, battalion vacated trenches and retired some hundred yards while every available gun bombarded Neuve Chapelle, right up to our fire trench. At 12.45am bombardment ceased and we re-occupied without opposition. Very heavy shelling from HE howitzers, percussion shrapnel from field guns all day, several of "A" and "B" company´´s trenches knocked about and evacuated temporarily. Very cold, high wind and rain, casualties 4 killed, 9 wounded´´; Crompton is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
