A Great War Group of Three to Private R. Mitchell, Royal Highlanders, Killed in Action 15.11.1914 1914 Star, with Bar (918 Pte. R. Mitchell. R. Highrs); British War and Victory Medals (918 Pte. R. Mitchell. R. Highrs.), good very fine or better (3) Estimate £ 180-220 918 Private Robert Mitchell, native of Arbroath; served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion Royal Highlanders on the Western Front from 13.8.1914; he was killed in action 15.11.1914; the 1st Battalion served as part of the 1st Guards Brigade under General S. Lomax during the 1st Battle of Ypres; throughout October the battalion had suffered horrendous losses and by the 1st November they could only muster 1 officer and 109 men to send into the line; David Lomas records the following on the 1st Battle of Ypres, ´´Between 15th and 22nd November 1914 the relief and reorganisation of the British Line took place.... The casualties at Ypres, the recital of loses, the repitition of figures numbs the mind.... The old British regular army was effectively destroyed´´; Mitchell is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
