A Great War Group of Five to Private C. East, South Wales Borderers, Killed in Action, 26.9.1914 Queen´s South Africa 1899-1902, three clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal (6316 Pte. C. East, S. Wales Bord.), minor edge bruising; King´s South Africa 1901-02, two clasps (6316 Pte. C. East. S. Wales Bord:); 1914 Star (6316 Pte. C. East. S. Wales Bord.); British War and Victory Medals (6316 Pte. C. East. S. Wales Bord.), Q.S.A. and K.S.A., very fine, Great War medals, extremely fine (5) Estimate £ 380-420 6316 Private Charles East, born South Shields; served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion South Wales Borderers on the Western Front from 31.8.1914; he was killed in action 26.9.1914; on the latter date the 1st Battalion were in action during the Battle of the Aisne, and the Germans launched a heavy sustained assault on their positions at Vendresse; the Regimental War Diary gives the Battalion´´s losses for the day as 4 officers and 86 men killed, 3 officers and 95 men wounded and 12 men missing, with "D" Company taking the brunt of the assault, ´´the Regiment stuck to it and fought as Englishmen and the 24th men could fight.´´ (Regimental War Diary, refers); East is commemorated on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial.
