Pompey the Great (42-40 BC), AR Denarius, issued by Sextus Pompey, Catana (Sicily), bare head of Pompey the Great right, lituus before, [mag] pivs imp iter, rev. Neptune standing, left, foot on a prow, between, the Catanean brothers, Anapias and Amphinomus, each carrying a parent on their shoulders, praef above, clas.et.orae marti.ex s.c. in ex. (Cr. 511/3a; Syd. 1344), edges a little ragged, pleasing tone, good very fine Estimate £ 500-600 provenance Glendining, 9 October 1989, lot These coins were issued by Sextus Pompey as ´´commander of the Fleet and Sea Coasts´´ following his victory over Salvidienus when he was acclaimed as the son of Neptune. The Catanean brothers were renowned for having rescued their parents during an eruption of Mt. Etna. As well as being an indication of the place of mintage, the type illustrates the theme of ´´Pietas´´ in connection with Sextus´´ assumption of the name of Pius.
