Auction: 8004 - An Important Collection of Renaissance Medals & Plaquettes
Lot: 18
Ulocrino (attrib.) Apollo and Marsyas, rectangular bronze plaquette, 68mm. x 50.5mm. (51mm at base), a very good contemporary cast, medium brown patina, pierced at top, two areas of solder and trace of old number in ink on reverse Apollo seated at left, wearing a cloak over his shoulders, holding a plectrum in his right hand and balancing a lyre on his left leg, looks back over his right shoulder. At right, Marsyas is tied to a tree. A viol and a set of pipes lie on the ground. Apollo is looking away from Marsyas, not concerned with his punishment, and the plaquette can be regarded as an allegory of music. A signed version is in the Ca´ d´oro in Venice, and circular examples with a border of palm leaves can be found in the Louvre (Garnier 37) and the Morgenroth collection. Planiscig in Riccio, p. 467, draws attention to the similarity of the figure of Marsyas to the relief of Temperance on the candelabra by Riccio in the Basilica of St Anthony (´il Santo´) at Padua.
