Medallist of the Medici Restoration (c.1513-1521) Pope Leo X, bronze medal, 76.5mm., a fine contemporary cast in high relief (max. 17.5mm.), rich brown patina. pierced at 12 o´clock Obverse: bust of Leo X in high relief in profile to the left, wearing camauro and mozzetta, LEO · X · P · - MAX · Reverse: shield of the Medici surmounted by crossed keys and Papal tiara, GLORIA ET HONORE CORONASTI · EV · DE · This medal of Giovanni di Lorenzo de´Medici (1475, Pope 1513-1521), and another of Giuliano de´Medici, Duke of Nemours, who, having returned in triumph to Florence, was summoned to Rome at the time of Giovanni´s election to the papacy and given Roman citizenship and the dignity Patricius Romanus, have earned for the anonymous artist the title Medallist of the Medici Restoration. As the reverse legend makes clear, the medal was made to celebrate the Pope´s coronation.
