Neapolitan School (c.1500-1525) Andrea Carafa, bronze medal, 66.8mm., a very good contemporary cast, although a little rough as usual, brown patina, pierced at 12 o´clock Obverse: bust of Caraffa in profile to right, wearing helmet decorated with plume in front and small plume over temple, and wearing cuirass and shirt of mail, ANDREAS CARRAFA SANTE SEVERINE COMES Reverse: horse-head shield of Caraffa arms, suspended by a knotted strap, between a steel-yard on left and a screw-jack with scroll on right, CONTERET CONTRARIA VIRTVS Andrea Caraffa († 1526), Count of Santa Severina 1496 and Viceroy of Naples 1525. The medal gives the title Count of Santa Severina and therefore can be dated after 1496. Hill draws attention to the similarities between the portrait on this medal with the medallion portrait on the monument to Andrea´s father, Galeotto, in San Domenico Maggiore, Naples, attributed to Romolo di Settignano and erected by Andrea in 1513.
