China 1897 Small Figures 10c. International Rate 1897 (7 Feb.) envelope to Ohio bearing 2c. on 2ca. green (3.5mm gap) tied by "customs/ningpo" c.d.s.; used in combination with Japan 1896 War with China 5s. violet-blue tied by "shanghai/i.j.p.o." c.d.s. in blue; the reverse with Customs Shanghai, Yokohama and arrival c.d.s.; light vertical filing crease. An appealing part paid cover, the 2c. for internal post and the 5s. for international. Although the day is not very clear, this is an early use of the new surcharge stamps.
