Geological Society of London, Wollaston Medal, 1831, specimen striking in bronze, draped bust left, signed w. wyon mint on truncation, in field to right, vertically, wollaston, rev. a closed wreath, in small letters below the geological society of london, 44mm. (BHM.1543), extremely fine, rare Estimate £ 80-100 William Hyde Wollaston (1766-1828), physiologist, chemist and physicist, the discoverer of palladium and rhodium, established the Wollaston Fund in 1828. The society gave the first medal in 1831. Between 1846-1860 the medal was struck in palladium, and subsequently it was struck in gold.
