A Rare Great War ´French Theatre´ 1918 D.C.M. to Sergeant A. Macaulay, Guards Machine Gun Regiment, and Scots Guards Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (888 A. Sjt: A, Macaulay. 2/ Gds: Bde: M.G. Coy.), good fine Estimate £ 1,000-1,200 D.C.M. London Gazette 17.4.1918 888 A./Sjt. A. Macaulay, M.G. Coy. (Royal British Hotel, Perth) ´For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When in charge of a machine gun in a forward isolated post at a time when the hostile shell fire round his post was exceptionally severe, and when the enemy were repeatedly making night attacks, he set a splendid example to his men, and by his vigilance and resource prevented all possibility of the hostile attacks developing. He has always been conspicuous for his fearlessness and coolness under heavy fire.´ 888 Sergeant Angus Macaulay, D.C.M., born Harries, Inverness, 1891; enlisted Scots Guards, 13.11.1911; served on the Western Front from 9.11.1914; transferred 2nd Guards Brigade, Machine Gun Company, 17.1.1916; wounded in the field, 31.7.1916; promoted Corporal, 10.3.1917; Acting Sergeant, 31.7.1918; discharged 27.3.1919 as no longer physically fit for War Service. The 2nd Guards Machine Gun Company was formed in September 1915 from the machine gun elements of 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards, 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, 1st Battalion Scots Guards, and 2nd Battalion Irish Guards. One of only 23 D.C.M.s to the Guards Machine Gun Companies and Guards Machine Gun Regiment combined.
