A Rare Great War 1918 French Theatre, ´Le Cateau´ D.C.M. Group of Three to Sergeant E.C. Goddard, Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry) Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (52730 Cpl. E.C. Goddard. 6/Sqn: Cav. M.G.C.); British War and Victory Medals (52730 A. Sjt. E.C. Goddard. M.G.C.), about extremely fine (3) Estimate £ 1,500-1,700 D.C.M. London Gazette 10.1.1920 52730 Cpl. E.C. Goddard, 6th Sqdn., Cav. M.G. Corps (Reading). ´For Conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Honnachy on 9/10/18. In the advance, under heavy fire, a pack horse in front of him was killed. He jumped off and tried in vain to get the pack off the dead horse on his own. On rejoining his section he found the gun had not come up as the gun horse had been killed. He at once went back for it in full view of the enemy, got the gun and tripod off and brought it forward.´ 52730 Corporal Edward C. Goddard, D.C.M., served with 6 Squadron, Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry), which was formed 29.2.1916 in 3 Cavalry Division as the machine gun element to 3 Dragoon Guards, 1 (Royal) Dragoons, and "C" Battery Royal Horse Artillery. Goddard won his D.C.M. during the Second Battle of Le Cateau, when, on 9.10.1918, the British Third and Fourth Armies, with British cavalry, defeated 23 German Divisions between Cambrai and St. Quentin. One of only 34 D.C.M.s to MGC Cavalry.
