A Scarce Eight-Clasp M.G.S. to Sergeant C. Langton, 57th Foot, One of the ´Die-Hards´ at Albuhera Military General Service 1793-1814, eight clasps, Busaco, Albuhera, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, Orthes, Toulouse (C. Langton, Serjt. 57th Foot.), light scratches to obverse, minor edge bruise, very fine Estimate £ 2,400-2,800 Sergeant Charles Langton, born Surrey; enlisted 57th Foot, 1804; discharged 1825, after 21 years and 141 days service with the Colours. Albuhera Of the 24 Officers and 570 Privates of the 57th Regiment who took part in the Battle of Albuhera, only one Officer remained standing, and over 400 privates fell. From this stubborn resistance the Regiment earned the sobriquet ´Die-Hards´. Published Roll gives surname incorrectly as ´Laugton´. Provenance: Noted as sold privately, 1929 Glendining 1977.
