A Superb Punjab and Mutiny Pair to Private S. Butcher, 9th Lancers Punjab 1848-49, two clasps, Chilianwala, Goojerat (S. Butcher, 9th Lancers.); Indian Mutiny 1857-58, three clasps, Delhi, Relief of Lucknow, Lucknow (Saml. Butcher, 9th Lancers), good very fine or better (2) Estimate £ 1,100-1,200 1521 Private Samuel Butcher, born Bocking, Essex, 1824; joined 9th Lancers, 1846; served in the Punjab campaign, and was present at the passage of the Chenab (4.12.1848), and the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat; served during the Indian Mutiny and was present at the battle of Budlee-ke-Serai (8.6.1857), throughout the siege operations at Delhi and in the assault on the city; the actions at Boolundshur (28.9.1857), Allighur (5.10.1857) and Agra (10.10.1857); participated in the attacks on the Gwalior rebels at and near Cawnpore and at Serai Ghat, December 1857; accompanied Walpole´s force marching on Etawah and was in action at Shamshabad (27.1.1858); present during operations at the Siege of Lucknow and was with the regiment at the attack on Ruiya Fort (15.4.1858), at Alleegung (22.4.1858) and the capture of Bareilly (5.5.1858); present in the actions at Shahjeharipore (18.5.1858) and Mahom Dee (24.5.1858) which drove the mutineers for Rohilcund; Butcher served through the entire campaign in Oude, being present at the passage of the Gogra (25.11.1858), at Mulchlegar (16.12.1858) and the final action at Kumbda Kothi (4.1.1859); discharged 1860.
