Sixtus IV (Francesco della Rovere, born 1414, Pope 1471-84), bronze medal by Lysippus Junior, 40mm., sixtvs iiiipont max sacricvltor, bust left, wearing cope, pearled border, rev. cvra rervm pvblicarvm above view of the Ponte Sisto, wreath border (Arm. II, 62, 3; Bargello I, 174; Hill 806; Weber, Bauten Roms, p.106, no.199), dark brown with rich black patina, pierced for suspension, an excellent contemporary cast Estimate £ 300-500 Lisippo il Giovane, whose real name is not known, is documented as a nephew of Cristofor di Geremia, and was working in Rome 1471-84. His sitters were mainly persons connected with the Curia or the University at Rome. Foundation medals in gold, probably of this type, were deposited in the Ponte Sisto in 1473.
