Captain James Cook, silver memorial medal by L. Pingo, 42mm., undated, uniformed bust left, rev. Fortune leaning on a column, holding a rudder on a globe (Betts 553; BHM.258; E.780), good very fine, scarce Estimate £ 1,000-1,200 Produced in 1784 for the Royal Society as a tribute to Captain Cook, who was elected a Fellow of the Society in 1775. The Society´s records show that 289 medals were struck in silver.
