Hagia Irene, the first home of the Imperial Museum, Istanbul, legend and date 1946 in exergue, 80mm., extremely fine Estimate £ 60-80 The Imperial Museum, the forerunner of the Istanbul Archeological Museum, was founded by Fethi Ahmet Pasa in 1846. The son of Mahmud II, and the Minister of War, Fethi Ahmet Pasa was the first to organise the large collections of works of art and weapons, many of them the spoils of war, that had accumulated in the Topkapi palace. The church of St Eirene was the first home, but soon this building proved too small and grand galleries based on western European models were built.
