Abdul Hamid II (A.H.1293-1327; A.D.1876-1909), Hamidiye Hicaz Demiryolu Madalyasi, H.1318 (Medal for Damascus to Mecca Railway, 1900), silver (2), Tughra above train, date 1318 below, all within wreath, rev.inscription, 30mm., 14g. (ME.278; NP.1118), both pierced for suspension, one blackened, both very fine (2) Estimate £ 60-80 The railway from Damascus to Mecca served the dual purpose of helping to control the Arabian peninsula and facilitating the yearly pilgrimage to Mecca. The work was undertaken without foreign aid, and special taxes were collected and stamps issued to fund the project. This medal was struck in two sizes and in gold, silver and white metal. The large (68mm.) medals were commemorative and were sold to the public. The smaller (30mm.) medals were given to the men and women who worked on the project.
