Abdul Hamid II (A.H.1293-1327; A.D.1876-1909), Yunan Muharebesi Madalyasi, H.1314 (Medal for Greece, 1896), silver (2), Tughra in wreath, rev. inscription, 24mm. (ME.275; NP.1128), both pierced for suspension, very fine (2) Estimate £ 60-80 Awarded in silver only, for the Ottoman-Greek War of 1896-97. After another uprising on the island of Crete, Greece moved forces to the island, and Turkey declared war. The Western European powers intervened on Greece´s behalf, and halted the Turkish advance on Athens. After the Treaty of Istanbul 1897,.Crete became partially independent, and eventually declared itself part of Greece in 1908.
